KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces killed a Taliban cell leader during a security operation in Nad ‘Ali district, Helmand province, Thursday.
Ajmal, also known as Ahmed Shah, is believed to have commanded an attack cell and directed insurgent activity throughout western Helmand, including multiple attacks on Afghan security forces.
In the days prior to his death, Ajmal is believed to have conducted an attack wounding several Afghan soldiers.
During the operation, the security force positively identified Ajmal and one other individual engaged in insurgent activity. After ensuring no civilians were in the area, the security force engaged Ajmal and the other insurgent with a precision airstrike, killing both.
A post-strike assessment determined no civilians were harmed and no civilian property was damaged.

An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during an operation to arrest a Taliban leader in Now Zad district, Helmand province, today. The Taliban leader is believed to direct insurgent activity throughout the district, including the acquisition of weapons and attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces. The security force also seized multiple assault rifles and illegal narcotics as a result of this operation.
Afghan commandos from the General Directorate of Police Special Units and coalition forces discovered a large cache of weapons and drugs during a vehicle interdiction in Reg-e-Khanishen district, Helmand province yesterday. The combined force seized more than 580 kilograms of dry opium, 100 kilograms of wet opium, multiple weapons, ammunition and night vision goggles. The force also detained three insurgents during the operation. The detained insurgents are suspected of enabling attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the area. Sales from illegal drugs are believed to fund insurgent activity throughout Afghanistan, according to Afghan and coalition officials.
