Three police and ten civilians were killed in a Taliban suicide attack in the Alishir District of Afghanistan's eastern Khost province Saturday afternoon, officials said.
A group of gunmen with suicide vests opened fire before detonating themselves at a police checkpoint in the Terizai area of Khost's Alishir district, according to a statement released by the coalition forces' Bagram media.
Ten civilians and three security forces were killed, the statement said.
The number of the wounded was not provided, but Bagram media said they were transferred to a nearby hospital.
Alishir district governor Mir Padshah Dawran earlier told TOLOnews four police and one civilian were wounded, and seven people were killed - three police and four civilians.
The suicide bomber detonated his body-borne explosives at around 2:00 PM local time, targeting a joint national and border police checkpoint in Terizai area, Dawran said.
The commander of the checkpoint Sergeant Gul Naim was among those killed by the blast.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had killed 12 police and injured 9 others in the incident.
Afghanistan's Ministry of Interior is yet to comment on the attack.
Khost shares a border with the Paktia and Logar provinces which have all seen insurgent-perpetrated violence increasing more recently.
