Kenya: Garissa Terrorist Blown Up in His Own Explosive

A middle aged terror suspect in Garissa was on wednsday night ripped to peaces after an IED he was trying to plant went off killing him instantly and severely wounding his accomplices.

The 9.30 pm explosion which was had more than five Km away happened along the busy kismayu road, only some 200 meters from the spot where three KDF soldiers were shot dead by suspected Al Shabaab operatives last November.

Confirming the incident NEP Deputy PPO Noor Gabow said the terrorists were targeting military and police vehicles which ply the route when travelling to Dadaab, Wajir, Mandera and Kismayu.

"We have launched a manhunt for the accomplices of the killed man who we believe managed to get away and receiving treatment at private location," said Gabow.

This comes only a day after locals leaders and business men led by Garissa senator Yussuf Haji initiated efforts to form vigilante groups to compliment the efforts of security officers in restore sanity in the insecurity hit town.

In late February this year, at least this terror suspects were killed as they tried to plant an improvised explosive device at the Garissa primary school grounds where the then Narc Kenya presidential candidate Martha Karua was scheduled to address a rally.

Police managed to recover two guns, one which had earlier been stolen from a slain police officer who was killed at the Garissa market. Garissa town has borne brunt of retaliatory attacks by al shabaab since kenya troops crossed over into Somalia in late 2011 following a series of attacks and kidnappings in the country. Since then over 300 people have lost their lives including police officers, military officers, government officials and civilians have been killed .

In Several Joint Clearance Operations, 72 Armed Taliban Killed (June 01.2013.)

Counterterrorism:
In past 24 hours, Afghan National Police conducted several joint clearance operations with the cooperation of Afghan National Army, NDS and Coalition Forces to clean some of the areas from terrorists and enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan.

The operations were conducted in Badakhshan, Balkh, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Paktika, Paktiya, Herat and Ghor provinces, as a result 72 armed Taliban were killed, two wounded and eight other armed Taliban were arrested by Afghan National Security Forces.

Also, during these operations, Afghan National Police discovered and confiscated some amount of light and heavy rounds ammunition and IEDs.
During the same 24 hour period, Afghan National Police discovered and defused two different types of mines placed by enemies of Afghanistan for destructive activities in Laghman province.

Counter Crimes:
The 101 Kabul Zone National Police detained two suspects accused of theft in the 15th District of Kabul-City.

June 01., 2013. - ISAF Joint Command Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader and one other enemy of Afghanistan during an operation in Marjeh district, Helmand province, June 1.

The leader is responsible for multiple direct and indirect fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He is also involved in the construction of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices for use in attacks and provides operational reports to his fellow Taliban fighters.

The security force also seized one mortar round and one AK-47 magazine as a result of the operation.

Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed June 1 the death of a senior Taliban leader, Razaq, during an operation in Khakrez district, Kandahar province, Thursday. Razaq directed and executed improvised explosive device, indirect fire and direct fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He provided instruction on making IEDs and distributed suicide vests for use in attacks. He was also responsible for the facilitation of IEDs, weapons and military equipment for multiple Taliban groups operating in Kandahar.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested two enemies of Afghanistan during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, June 1. The senior leader is responsible for a wide range of Taliban activity. He oversees a group of fighters involved in ambushes, improvised explosive device operations and complex attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also facilitates the movement of weapons in various districts throughout Nangarhar province and serves as an intelligence operative for senior Taliban officials. The security force also seized eight pounds of opium as a result of the operation.

23 militants killed in military operation in NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, June 1 (Xinhua) -- At least 23 militants were killed in an overnight operation launched by Pakistan army in the country 's northwest tribal area of Kurram Agency, reported local media ARY on Saturday.

The clashes between militants and security forces also killed two soldiers and wounded five others, said local media.

According to the local media reports, the operation started last night in the Para Chamkani area of Kurram Agency, a restive tribal region which borders to east Afghanistan.

During the operation, security forces also reportedly destroyed four militant hideouts.

On Friday, a statement issued the army mouthpiece ISPR said that 19 militants were killed in separate military operations conducted in Kurram Agency and its neighboring Khyber Agency since Thursday night.

In the operations, the two soldiers were also martyred, said the statement.

IMU, Taliban launched joint suicide assault in Panjshir

The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, an al Qaeda and Taliban-linked group that operates in Afghanistan, claimed it executed the May 29 suicide assault on the governor's compound in Panjshir in concert with the Taliban. The IMU announced that the attack was part of the Taliban's 2013 spring offensive.
The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan released the statement announcing its participation in the attack in Panjshir, one of the most secured provinces in Afghanistan and the bastion of the former Northern Alliance. The statement was obtained and translated by the SITE Intelligence Group.
The IMU admitted that the attack was executed under the banner of the Taliban's Khalid bin Waleed spring offensive, which was announced at the end of April. In that statement, the Taliban said it would conduct suicide assaults on Coalition and Afghan facilities. The IMU has integrated its operations with the Taliban in the Afghan north; the two groups conduct joint attacks, and IMU leaders serve in the Taliban's shadow government in some areas.
"This attack is the continuation of series of attacks which bear the name of Khalid bin Waleed' announced by Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the spring of 2013," the IMU said.
The IMU said that the six members of the suicide assault team "were equipped with light and heavy weaponry, hand grenades" and "were wearing explosive filled martyrdom costumes" and "suits of policemen."
Three of the fighters were from Afghanistan, two were from Uzbekistan, and one was from Kyrgyzstan.
"Those six mujahids comprised of three from Mawarounnahr [Transoxiana, the historic name for the area of Central Asia consisting of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, southern Kyrgyzstan and southwest Kazakhstan] and the other three from Afghanistan, all of whom were on the fidai list (the waiting list of martyrdom-seeking mujahids) impatiently waiting for their turn," the statement said, according to SITE.

May 31., 2013. - ISAF Joint Command Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan and coalition security forces arrested a Taliban facilitator during an operation in Chimtal district, Balkh province, May 30.

The facilitator is responsible for the movement of explosives and weapons in the Balkh province for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He collects illegal taxes from civilians to pay for weapons and has command and control over a cell of Taliban fighters responsible for multiple attacks in the local area.

4 killed, 7 wounded in violence in Iraq

BAGHDAD, May 31 (Xinhua) -- At least four people, including three policemen, were killed and seven others injured in clashes and attacks in Iraq on Friday, a police source said.
Three policemen were killed in clashes with gunmen early Friday in the city of Fallujah, 50 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Elsewhere, a worshiper was killed and four others were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near a Sunni mosque after Friday prayers in the Saidiya area in southwestern Baghdad, he said.

Also on Friday, an Iraqi police officer and two civilians were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near a checkpoint in Sharqat, some 280 km north of Baghdad, he added.

The attacks came amid escalation of sectarian tension between the Sunni and Shiite communities in Iraq, which has been at its highest level since the U.S. troops pulled out from the country at the end of 2011.

Afghan battle leaves 31 Taliban dead

GHAZNI, Afghanistan, May 31 (Xinhua)-- Clash between Taliban militants and pro-government villagers in Andar district of Ghazni province, 125 km south of Kabul, has left 31 Taliban fighters dead on Friday.

"Taliban militants raided three villages in Andar district at 01:00 a.m. local time and we resisted. The gun battle lasted for six hours during which 31 rebels, including Pakistanis, Arabs and Chechens, were killed and the remaining rebels run away," commander of villagers, Latif Kamran told Xinhua.

Meanwhile, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit, confirmed the conflict in talks with media via telephone from unknown location, saying that the militants have killed 10 pro-government militias, a claim rebuffed by Kamran as baseless.

The inhabitants of several villages in Andar district had made armed uprising against Taliban militants last year and since have evicted Taliban militants from several villages.
