8 civilians killed, 5 injured in roadside bombing in Helmand

KABUL, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Up to eight civilians were killed and five others injured in a roadside bombing in the southern Afghan province of Helmand on Monday, the country's Interior Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

"Eight innocent civilians were killed and five others injured when a vehicle touched off a roadside bomb at around 4 p.m. local time Monday in Capahasia area of Musa Qala district," the ministry said in a statement.

Women and children were among the killed and injured, the statement said without disclosing more details.

The statement blamed Taliban for the attack in the far-flanged district in the Helmand province with Lashkar Gah as its capital some 555 km south of capital Kabul.

Militancy has been on constant rise since the Taliban launched its spring offensive on May 3 this year.

Taliban militants have been largely relying on roadside bombing and suicide attacks in fighting Afghan security force and NATO-led troops based in Afghanistan, often causing civilian casualties.

However, the Taliban insurgent group has not made comments yet.

A total of 579 Afghan civilians were killed and 1,216 other civilians were wounded from Jan. 1 to April 30 this year, according to figures released by UN mission in the country while some 3,021 Afghan civilians were killed in 2011 in the insurgency- hit country.
