PUL-I-ALAM (PAN): Scores of residents of Pul-i-Alam, the capital of central Logar province, have taken up arms against the Taliban, an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) official said on Saturday.
The Qiyam Movement, also known as "People's Uprising," was created by locals to stop intimidation, extortion and school closings by the insurgents, said Capt. Daniel Hill of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force.
“More than 30 villages and 150 locals have pledged to assist with the movement if they receive aid from Afghan security forces,” the official said in a statement.
He claimed the National Security Directorate of Security -- the Afghan spy service -- had announced support for the movement by providing approximately id="mce_marker"00,000. Up to 70 residents are fighting against the rebels.
