Eight armed insurgents killed and one other arrested by Afghan National Police
Counterterrorism:
During the past 24 hours, Afghan National Police, Afghan National Army,
NDS and Coalition Forces launched eight joint clearance operations in
Kabul, Nangarhar, Nooristan, Baghlan, Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul and
Uruzgan provinces.
As a result of these operations, eight armed insurgents were killed and one other was arrested by Afghan National Police.
Also, during these operations, Afghan National Police discovered and
confiscated one mortar round, one rocket launcher, 25 different types of
weapons, 15 radio handsets, 21 heavy rounds, 950 light rounds, four
anti-vehicle mines, 2kg of opium, 7kg of explosive materials, 155
magazines and four motorbikes.
During the same 24 hour period, Afghan National Police discovered and
defused one anti-vehicle mine, 27 heavy rounds and 125 kilograms of
explosive materials as a result of security operations in Logar and
Ghazni provinces.
In the meantime, Afghan National Police arrested one armed insurgent
with an explosives laden motorbike in the Shikh Lala region, Farah City
capital of Farah province, yesterday.
Additionally, one mine planter was killed by his own explosives while
he attempted to plant a roadside mine in the Panjwaie District of
southern Kandahar province, yesterday.
Three police and ten civilians were killed in a Taliban
suicide attack in the Alishir District of Afghanistan's eastern Khost
province Saturday afternoon, officials said.
A group of gunmen with suicide vests opened fire before detonating
themselves at a police checkpoint in the Terizai area of Khost's Alishir
district, according to a statement released by the coalition forces'
Bagram media.
Ten civilians and three security forces were killed, the statement said.
The number of the wounded was not provided, but Bagram media said they were transferred to a nearby hospital.
Alishir
district governor Mir Padshah Dawran earlier told TOLOnews four police
and one civilian were wounded, and seven people were killed - three
police and four civilians.
The suicide bomber detonated his
body-borne explosives at around 2:00 PM local time, targeting a joint
national and border police checkpoint in Terizai area, Dawran said.
The commander of the checkpoint Sergeant Gul Naim was among those killed by the blast.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had killed 12 police and injured 9 others in the incident.
Afghanistan's Ministry of Interior is yet to comment on the attack.
Khost

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the
creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air
Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of
the Armed Forces under one department — the Department of Defense. Each
of the military leagues and orders was asked to drop sponsorship of its
specific service day in order to celebrate the newly announced Armed
Forces Day. The Army, Navy and Air Force leagues adopted the newly
formed day. The Marine Corps League declined to drop support for Marine
Corps Day but supports Armed Forces Day, too.
In a speech announcing the formation of the day, President Truman
“praised the work of the military services at home and across the seas”
and said, “it is vital to the security of the nation and to the
establishment of a desirable peace.” In an excerpt from the Presidential
Proclamation of Feb. 27, 1950, Mr. Truman stated:
“Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined
demonstration by America’s defense team of its progress, under the
National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any
eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified
forces of our land, sea, and air defense”.
The theme of the first Armed Forces Day was “Teamed for Defense.” It
was chosen as a means of expressing the unification of all the military
forces under a single department of the government.
Although this was
the theme for the day, there were several other purposes for holding
Armed Forces Day. It was a type of “educational program for civilians,”
one in which there would be an increased awareness of the Armed Forces.
It was designed to expand public understanding of what type of job is
performed and the role of the military in civilian life. It was a day
for the military to show “state-of- the-art” equipment to the civilian
population they were protecting. And it was a day to honor and
acknowledge the people of the Armed Forces of the United States.
According to a New York Times article published on May 17, 1952:
“This is the day on which we have the welcome opportunity to pay special
tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces … to all the
individuals who are in the service of their country all over the world.
Armed Forces Day won’t be a matter of parades and receptions for a good
many of them. They will all be in line of duty and some of them may give
their lives in that duty.”
The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated by parades, open houses,
receptions, and air shows. In Washington D.C., 10,000 troops of all
branches of the military, cadets, and veterans marched pass the
President and his party. In Berlin, 1,000 U.S. troops paraded for the
German citizens at Templehof Airfield. In New York City, an estimated
33,000 participants initiated Armed Forces Day “under an air cover of
250 military planes of all types.” In the harbors across the country
were the famed mothballed “battlewagons” of World War II, the Missouri,
the New Jersey, the North Carolina, and the Iowa, all open for public
inspection. Precision flying teams dominated the skies as tracking radar
were exhibited on the ground. All across the country, the American
people joined together to honor the Armed Forces.

According to Afghan Interior Ministry officials Afghan police forces foiled a bombing plot in western Farah province after seizing a motorcycle packed with explosives from this province.
The source further added Afghan police forces detained a Taliban militant along with a motorcycle packed with explosives in western Farah province on Friday morning.
The militant was looking to carry out insurgency attack at the Central city of Farah province, the officials said.
In the meantime another militant was killed at Panjwai district of southern Kandahar province while he was planting roadside improvised explosive device.
In a separate statement Afghan Interior Ministry announced at least 8 Taliban militants were killed and one of them was detained following operations by Afghan national police forces during the past 24 hours.
The statement further added Afghan police forces conducted eight separate military operations along with the Afghan army, Afghan intelligence and coalition security forces at Kabul, Nangarhar, Nuristan, Baghlan, Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul and Uruzgan provinces of Afghanistan.
Afghan security forces also seized some weapons, ammunitions and explosives during the military operations, Afghan interior ministry officials said following the statement.
Anti-government armed militant groups yet to comment regarding the reports.
KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan-led security force supported by coalition
troops captured a senior Taliban leader during an operation in Dand
district, Kandahar province, today.
The leader operates in Lashkar Gah district, Helmand province. He
attempted to control the Afghan civilians and infrastructure in the
district through murder and intimidation tactics.
He is also suspected in coordinating the assassination of a government official in Kabul.
The security force also detained several other insurgents as a result of this operation.

An Afghan led supported by a coalition security force conducted an
operation to detain a senior Taliban leader in Nad ‘Ali district,
Helmand province, yesterday.The leader, who is also an explosives
expert, directs attacks throughout Nad ‘Ali and Lashkar Gah districts.
He also coordinates with other Taliban leaders to supply weapons,
ammunition, equipment and explosives to subordinates. Multiple suspected
insurgents were detained as a result of the operation.
In Panjwa-i district, Kandahar province, an Afghan and coalition
security force discovered a drug cache during counter-narcotics
operation yesterday. The cache consisted of approximately 300 pounds
(136 kilograms) of hashish. Security forces destroyed the drugs without
incident.

East
An Afghan and coalition security force captured a senior Taliban leader
in Aliabad district, Kunduz province, Wednesday. The leader was the
Taliban liaison for the Peshawar Shura, a group responsible for
insurgent activity in eastern and northern Afghanistan. He also served
as a facilitator for the Nuristan Taliban shadow governor and organized
the transportation of weapons, foreign fighters and suicide bombers for
attacks throughout the region.The security force detained two additional
insurgents as a result of the operation.
KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): A senior Afghan police officer was killed as a result of a roadside bombing in northern Kunduz province on Thursday, an official said.
Capt. Habibullah, the engineering team head at the police headquarter, was killed when the bomb he was defusing went off, said the 3rd police district head, Lt. Col. Saleh Mohammad.
He added they were informed by local police regarding the bomb planted in the Zarkharid area of Kunduz City, the provincial capital. The bomb exploded as Habibullah and his team were trying to defuse it.
The police officer's body was blown to bits in the explosion. Driver Nisar Ahmad said the explosion had left a crater in the road.
BAGHDAD, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Three roadside bombs ripped through a popular pet market in Baghdad Friday, killing five civilians and wounding 31 others, a police source said.
The explosions happened in Baghdad's northern district of Husseiniya early in the day and appeared to target civilians, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Several shops were severely damaged in the market, the source added.
The police have cordoned off the site for fear of more explosions.
Violence in Iraq ebbed in recent months, but shootings and bombings still remain chronic.
Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) -- Three roadside bombs exploded Friday in quick succession at an outdoor pet market in Baghdad, killing five people and wounding 31 others, police officials said.
The bombings took place at a market where young men buy and sell pigeons in Husseiniya, a poor Shiite neighborhood in southeastern Baghdad. This type of market, popular in less affluent neighborhoods, tends to be very busy on Fridays.
In February 2008, 99 people were killed by bomb attacks at two other pet markets in Baghdad.
Daily violence has dropped drastically across Iraq since 2008, but sporadic attacks continue.
A series of bomb and gun attacks have taken place in different Iraqi cities this week, including a blast in a popular restaurant in southeastern Baghdad on Thursday evening that killed three people and wounded 10 others.
In April, 126 people were killed in attacks across the country and 271 people were wounded.
That was higher than in March, which had the lowest monthly death toll for Iraqis since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, when only 112 people were killed.
According local authorities in central Maidan Wardak province at least 8 militants were killed along with their commander following NATO airstrike at Syedabad district while they were planting roadside improvised explosive device.
The officials further added the militants were killed in two separate operations at Kaj Kala and Aftab Sia areas.
Syedabad district chief Dr. Fazal Karim Muslim said at least 5 militants along with their commander recognized as Daud were planting roadside bombs at Kaj Kala area and were killed following a NATO air raid around 2:00 am local time.
Mr. Muslim further added, in a separate operation at least 3 militants were killed at Kabul-Kandahar highway following an air raid.
He also said the eight militants who were killed following the operations were working for Mullah Farid Qeyam and were involved in planting roadside bombs and other insurgency activities.

At least two NATO service members were killed following militants attack in eastern regions of the country on Friday.
NATO-led International Security Assistance Force following a statement on Friday announced, “Two International Security Assistance Force service members died following an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan today.”
The statement did not disclose further information regarding the exact location of the incident and nationalities of the deceased soldiers.
International Security Assistance Force generally do not disclose identities of the NATO soldiers killed in Afghanistan saying, “It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.”
At least 158 NATO service members including 110 US troops, 20 British soldiers and 28 soldiers from the other NATO member countries have been killed in various incidents since the beginning of 2012 in Afghanistan.
KABUL, Afghanistan – In Burkah district, Baghlan province, an Afghan and
coalition security force recovered weapons and improvised explosive
devices during a patrol, Tuesday, May 16.
The combined forces confiscated a cache consisting of 30 mortar rounds,
30 mortar fuses, one grenade and several RPG’s. The material was
destroyed on site without incident.

An Afghan and coalition security force discovered a drugs cache during a
patrol in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, today. The cache
consisted of approximately 200 pounds (90 kilograms) of opium. Security
forces confiscated the drugs without incident.
East
An Afghan and coalition security force discovered a weapons and
explosives cache during an operation in Zurmat district, Paktiya
province, Tuesday. The cache consisted of two 107mm rockets, multiple
anti-tank mines, an improvised rocket launcher, one machine gun tripod,
one 12.7 mm machine gun, a quantity of 82 mm mortar ammunition and 66
gallons (250 liters) of explosives. All of the weapons and explosive
materials were destroyed on-site without incident.
