KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force seized more than 18 kilograms (40 pounds) of opium during an operation to detain a Taliban leader in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, yesterday.
The Taliban leader is responsible for planning attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the region, as well as providing supplies and lethal aid to Taliban insurgents.
The security force also detained multiple suspected insurgents as a result of this operation.

North
Afghan and coalition forces confirmed that the Taliban leader Nek Mohammad was killed during a security mission in Sar-e Pul district, Sar-e Pul province, Sunday. Mohammad served as a senior Taliban leader in the region and directed attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
In Chimtal district, Balkh province an Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban weapons supplier, today. The weapons supplier provided firearms, explosives and improvised explosive devices to Taliban insurgents throughout the region. At the time of his arrest he was in the process of acquiring additional IEDs for use in upcoming attacks. The security force detained one suspected insurgent during the operation.
South
An Afghan and coalition security force apprehended a Taliban leader in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, today. The detained Taliban leader was responsible for leading an attack cell and coordinating high-profile attacks throughout the region. At the time of his arrest he was attempting to acquire suicide vests and more than 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of explosives. During the operation the security force detained two suspected insurgents.
East
In Ghazni district, Ghazni province an Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed the Taliban leader known as Hamza was killed during a security operation Monday. Hamza managed several Taliban insurgents in Ghazni and coordinated attacks with other Taliban leaders throughout the region.
Finally, an Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader during an operation in Pul-e ‘Alam district, Logar province, today. The apprehended Taliban leader was responsible for attacks against coalition security patrols throughout the region and the killing of multiple Afghan soldiers in May. The security force detained several suspected insurgents during the operation.
